I said to Sean last week that I feel like I have seen Cuyler go from a 2 year old to a 3 year old in a matter of days.
And all he could say was "I know. I like this Handle shit."
I agree.
He seems to be less of a toddler lately. Which is good. Because he is 6.
And like as always happens - he was sick this weekend with a pretty high fever and lethargic. This morning he was miserable. Just fucking miserable. I really didn't know how I was going to manage the day with him. But he calmed down after eating pasta he should not have eaten.
And then he was fine. Better than fine. He seemed to grow a little more.
Chatty. He LOVED the pie-throwing task on the Amazing Race tonight and we all pretended to throw pie in each others faces. He laughed so hard he gave himself the hiccups.
He asked me to give him his massage (Handle activity) tonight as I tucked him. After his massage he said "Will you cuddle with me?"
Totally.
He asked me if school was closed tomorrow.
ME: "Nope. School is open. What do you want for lunch?"
CUYLER: "Umm. Let me think." As he tappes his chin. "Sausages!"
ME: "You want me to put sausages in your thermos?"
CUYLER: "Yes."
*He always wants chicken nuggets on Mondays. He has since the beginning of school and I was thrilled that he asked for something different.
He rolled around cuddling with me and then he asked me "Can I see Harman soon?"
ME: "Yep. You'll see him this week for reading buddies."
CUYLER: "Reading buddies is Wednesday. I can see him Wednesday."
ME: "That's great. You missed him. Are you feeling better?"
CUYLER: "Yes. I'm not sick anymore. I'm better."
ME: "I'm glad"
CUYLER: "I'm not barthing. And the yellow bucket is dirty."
ME: "Oh then I will clean it."
CUYLER: "Daddy can read me my Biscuit book. Can you get daddy?"
ME: "Of course I can."
I was blown away that I actually had a conversation with him. Small as it was it was one of those moments that will remain in my memory. Normally Cuyler is very static and won't initiate conversation. Doesn't offer many of his own thoughts. I know they are in there. In his head. He can form them but they don't come out very often.
And I can't help but wonder if his fever has anything to do with it. We are noticing that anytime he gets a fever, once he's over it he seems to be overall improved - language is better, attention is better, he doesn't feel the need to be alone all the time. He just seems more with us. And less autistic than he was before the fever.
And I can't help but wonder if his utter outright refusal to take any type of fever reducer has anything to do with it. Like he knows that his body will fight it and heal on it's own. I always wondered if he did take tylenol or advil if he would come out the the virus as improved.
We are taking him to a neurologist in March and that will be something I'd like to ask him about.
While I do hate when my kids get sick, especially with fevers, there is a part of us now that looks forward to what will emerg from Cuyler when he is well.
